PLSAS Unified is a district-wide initiative focused on creating inclusive environments where students with and without disabilities learn, lead, and grow together. Through classes, events, field trips, and social opportunities, Unified encourages meaningful connections across all grade levels.

Since launching in 2018 with a student-led vision at Prior Lake High School and Twin Oaks Middle School, the program has grown through intentional research, planning, and community support. In 2024, they hosted their first Unified Track and Field Day and took steps toward becoming a fully recognized Unified Champion District.

In 2024–25, PLSAS proudly joined just 17 districts in Minnesota designated as Unified Champion Districts — and are one of only four districts to offer Unified programming at the preschool level. All student participation and leadership are voluntary, reflecting a shared commitment to building a more inclusive school community.

What is a Unified Champion School?

Unified Champion Schools are places where students with disabilities feel welcomed, valued, and meaningfully included in all aspects of school life. This national movement empowers student leaders to create a school culture built on respect, inclusion, and unity.

A school earns the Unified Champion School designation by actively implementing three key components: Inclusive Student Leadership, Unified Sports & Whole School Engagement

These elements work together to foster a school-wide shift toward true inclusion. When all three are in place, the school is officially recognized as a Unified Champion School.

Unified Opportunities at PLSAS

Throughout the school year, PLSAS offers a variety of inclusive experiences that bring students of all abilities together to learn, lead, and grow. These opportunities help foster meaningful connections and celebrate the strengths of every student:

Polar Plunge
A powerful fundraising event supporting both Special Olympics Minnesota and PLSAS Unified programs. In 2025, PLSAS staff and students raised over $97,000 — the highest in the state — with 50% of funds raised returning to PLSAS to support Unified athletics and activities.

Themed Awareness Events
District-wide initiatives to promote inclusion and understanding include Unified Inclusivity Week, Bullying Prevention Month, Inclusive Schools Week, Kindness Month, Spread the Word Day, and Disability Awareness Days.

Unified Advisory
A dedicated 7th-grade Unified advisory group at Twin Oaks Middle School (TOMS) focused on building leadership and promoting inclusion.

Unified Bowling Field Trips
All schools participate in inclusive bowling events, providing fun and connection across grade levels.

Unified Class Options at Prior Lake High School
High school students can choose from inclusive class options in Physical Education and Family and Consumer Science (FACS), where students of all abilities learn and participate together. Click here to be directed to the PLHS Registration Guide to learn more.

Unified Clubs
Offered at PLHS, TOMS, and HOMS through a joint club model, students collaborate on inclusive activities, service projects, and school culture initiatives.

Unified Invitational Events
Students take part in inclusive sporting events (baseball, bowling, track & field, etc.) in partnership with neighboring districts like Shakopee, Farmington, and Lakeville South.

Unified Track & Field Days
Annual district-wide events where students with and without disabilities participate in adapted track and  field activities. Events are held separately for Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle/High School students.
